On Sunday afternoon, March 9th, a coed team made up of high school seniors was invited to participate in an all star hockey game against the Bruins Alumni Team at Cross Arena in Portland. The event was a fundraiser intended to raise money to benefit the Portland Firefighters Local 740. The All Star Team included players from North Yarmouth Academy, Portland, South Portland, Yarmouth, Falmouth, and Gorham High Schools. The Bruins Alumni Team included Bruce Shoebottom and his daughter Sami (Scarborough High School), Steve Tsujiura, Alfie Michaud, Kevin Kaminski, and John Carter, many former Portland Pirates. Lee Goldberg, from WCSH, was the game announcer, and the turnout for the game was fantastic.

The scoring began when Kristina Block from NYA broke down the middle, deked the defenseman, and put a backhander into the upper left corner of the net. It wasn’t long before the Bruins got revenge, getting a shot past Alex Barnes of NYA. In true all star fashion, there was plenty of scoring as the game went on, by the Bruins and by both the boys and the girls on the All Star team.  The All Stars played admirably, but the Bruins came away with the 10 to 6 win. Overall, the game was a lot of fun for both players and fans. There were some humorous moments as well, with some deliberate holding and ponytail pulling on the part of the Bruins.

Many of Maine’s better high school hockey players were spotlighted Sunday afternoon. It is encouraging and rewarding to observe the skill level that has been achieved by many of the Maine girls and the continued growth and improvement of girls hockey in the state. Many girls currently playing at the high school level, including a few of the girls playing in the all star game, will be moving on to play at a higher level next year and in coming years. For instance, all three graduating senior girls from NYA will be moving on to play in college. Alex Barnes will be playing at the College of the Holy Cross, Kristina Block at Chatham University and Mary Morrison will be taking a post grad year with an eye toward playing division I in college. The number of organizations, youth teams, and travel teams dedicated to girls hockey in Maine is having a very positive impact on the competitive level now seen in many high schools and beyond.

The lady all star forwards started the game with Kristina Block (North Yarmouth Academy) Emily Johnson (Yarmouth) and Lexie Michaud (Portland)
