Our Mission

The Maine Girls Ice Hockey Association (MGIHA) advances girls ice hockey in Maine by supporting leagues, creating more opportunities to play, and making the sport accessible at all levels.

We aim to provide experiences that turn players into lifelong advocates for girls hockey.

Why Girls Hockey Matters

Maine is ice hockey central, with hundreds of teams and thousands of players of all ages and skill levels. Yet boys have more than four times as many teams and players as girls. MGIHA works to close that gap.

We organized girls high school hockey before it was adopted by the Maine Principals Association in 2007. Today, our focus is on improving access and opportunities for girls hockey at every level.

Volunteers Make the Difference

Girls hockey thrives in communities where volunteers—like you—talk about the sport, invite girls to try it, and support programs with their time. Small actions in small towns can create strong, lasting organizations.

Programs and Resources Year-Round

MGIHA initiatives have included:

  • Creating and developing the High School Spring League
  • Supporting the Southern Maine Middle School Winter League (SMMSHL)
  • Free clinics and games for JV players

Our equipment trailer is stocked with loaner gear, making it easy for girls to try hockey at free clinics each fall.

Every town needs more middle and high school girl players and teams. Every player needs more ice time and girls to play with. Contact us to help build girls ice hockey programs in your area!

Things You Can Do

  • Organize a free girls hockey clinic for your town. We can lend our trailer with equipment, as well as on ice and off ice support. Off ice support can include providing drills and practice plans and publishing events on our social media pages. On ice support can include experienced coaching staff, player volunteers, and pucks, tennis balls, or soccer balls
  • Donate used hockey equipment to MGIHA. We currently have a donation bin located in the lobby at Family Ice Center in Falmouth, ME, or can arrange a pickup during our Spring League sessions. While we are thrilled to accept donations, please donate gear that is in good repair- no animals living in the equipment, no mold, non-expired gear. At this time we are only interested in gear in youth sizes through adult medium. We are no longer accepting helmets, men’s size goalie equipment, or other equipment in adult large or extra large.
  • Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) to help spread the word! Share our events and raise awareness about the state of girls ice hockey in Maine.
  • Consider joining us! MGIHA is a board run non-profit and we are looking for volunteers for the board now. We need enthusiastic people with great ideas!

We are always seeking new program ideas and volunteers. If you would like to get involved, please contact us.
