The popularity of girls hockey can vary from year to year. We’ve compiled a list of established girls hockey clubs in Maine. While a program may have a 16U team one year, the following year there may not be enough players to field a team. If your daughter is interested in playing, please reach out to the organization closest to you for the most up-to-date information.

Club Hockey Opportunities

The Maine Inferno are a not-for-profit organization supporting girls hockey throughout northern, eastern and central Maine. They have opportunities for girls of all ages, but currently have programs for players ages 14 and under. They have a presence from Orono to Rockland.

Casco Bay Youth Hockey is a large nonprofit organization based in the Greater Portland area. Casco Bay has opportunities for girls of all ages and skill levels.

The Maine Gladiators are another large nonprofit organization based in the Greater Lewiston/Auburn area. The Gladiators have opportunities for girls of all ages and skill levels.

The Maine Evolution is another nonprofit program based out of Southern Maine, with their home rink at USM in Gorham. The Evolution generally have girls programs for ages 10 and older.

Biddeford Youth Hockey is a nonprofit based in Biddeford. This program has limited girl’s offerings, but programs available change year to year.

Midcoast Jr. Polar Bears is a nonprofit based in Brunswick. This program has lots of teams for players as young as 4 to age 14.

Lingo to Know:

  • LTP (Learn to Play): Typically for 5–6 year olds with some skating experience.
  • BTI (Break the Ice): For 4–6 year olds with little or no hockey experience.
  • LTS (Learn to Skate): Same as BTI.
  • Tier IV: House hockey, open to players of any level.
  • Tier II: Travel hockey for skilled players with strong skating, puck handling, and hockey IQ.

Middle School Hockey

Southern Maine has a strong middle school hockey league, with many teams fielding girls’ squads. Games are typically on Sundays, and the season runs November through March.

High School Hockey

High school girls hockey in Maine varies yearly depending on player numbers. Many towns cannot field a full team and instead co-op with neighboring towns to form teams.
